Gay Grenade.

The UK news yesterday was filled with the Government's internal battle over the right of gay people to marry each other.  The Prime Minister and a large number of government ministers want to give gay people the same right to marry as heterosexual people but there is also a vocal section of his party who are against this.

As is always the case there are lots of people who seem to fear that by giving homosexual people the same rights as heterosexual people will further push society into moral decline.
However during the last decade a number of countries have allowed same sex couples to marry such as Argentina, Belgium, France, Canada, Denmark, Portugal, Norway and Spain. These countries have not slid into chaos.

For any of you who are reading this that believe that homosexual people should not have the right to marry then let me ask you a hypothetical question. Imagine that the tables were turned and that society was based on homosexual values instead of heterosexual. Same sex couples were legally allowed to marry in churches or registry offices but heterosexual people were not. How would this make you feel, would you feel like society treated you as a lesser being than the homosexuals? And how would you feel if other people stuck their noses into your life and told you that you must stop being attracted to members of the opposite sex and begin fancying people of your own gender.

Do you see how ridiculous this sounds? I enjoy the company of other men but feel no physical attraction to them. Men are lumpy, hairy things that smell whereas women are soft and smooth and curvy and smell wonderful.  Think about being told you must change your entire sex life on the say so of someone who has no business inflicting their views on you.

Some people are physically attracted to members of their own sex, why is this such a problem? How do other peoples sexual preferences impact on the lives of the disapproving?

There are so many things that are wrong and evil in the world yet instead of trying to deal with this there are many people who obsess over the sex lives of strangers, something that is absolutely nothing to do with them.

If two people of the same sex fall in love and want to commit to each other for the rest of their lives then we should be celebrating in the same way we do when people of the opposite sex do the same thing.
Because at the end of the day, no matter what sex we are attracted to we are all people.

Great piece of writing buddy and I agree with everything you've said mainly. People should have a choice and it's not like England would collapse if gay people could marry. One thing I don't understand is why the gays actually want to get married, don't they realise how hellacious marriages can be, I don't understand why any sane person would want to be married! Joking aside I hate that Cameron is possibly using this as a crutch to seal re-election with marriage set to be legalised right before the general election of 2015, very suspicious.

Live and let live.

And as far as the "Men are lumpy, hairy things that smell"--isn't that what makes men so wonderful! Manly men--that's what it's all about *smiling*

haha yeah can't say hairy lumpy men do it for me. But to each their own, ridiculous that they think it will collapse, pfft.

Well said and I agree, but I do find I am rather attracted to ice cream. particularly when it is soft and covered in chocolate.

I'm not sure Canada allows same sex marriages. I could be wrong. I know at one point there was a fight to allow rights for same sex common law relationships.

Hope your father enjoys Banff. I live only an hour away from it.

@Stina, Canada was one of the first nations to allow gay marriage

Well said Tony - I look forward to seeing you on BBC news later!

Agreed. The world has way bigger problems to worry about than these petty formalities which simply equate to drama.

I just cannot believe that some people are against letting gay people marry. I frankly couldn't give a tinker's fart who someone chooses as their "canoodling" partner. Love is love and it shouldn't matter.
Incidentally, I'm with you about dudes being hairy and smelly. To tell you the truth, I don't see what women see in us. If I was a woman, I'd be a lesbian.
Besides being one ugly broad.

Equality means more than legal rights. The word marriage is important because it means marriage. Domestic partnerships... that is like a Marriage lite.... almost the real thing.... with less commitment.... less acceptance, and certainly NOT equal. Separate but equal? Yeah, it's never equal. What keep marriage for straights and common laws for gays says is much the same message as I imagine much the same message separate water fountains for black and white had back in the day.

Sure, you can be equal.... but.... yeah, this, this is just ours, yours is over there... hey it's still water right? And the back of the bus gets there as fast as the front.

Lumpy and hairy? You really now how to sell it. I'm thinking of switching sides.

I'm all for equality of legal unions. Where it gets harry tho, is calling it marriage when the word itself comes from a God ordained union which is indicated as man and woman. I think that's why it's such a controversy. If everyone could just accept marriage as being termed a legal union, then we could satisfy everyone. Then again, maybe not. Peeps will always find something else to fight against.
But I totally agree in that if 2 peeps love each other and they're not hurting anybody, let them live their lives like anybody else.

You summed it up brilliantly with "we are all people." Gay marriage isn't a topic I've spent much time thinking on, but recently I came out with my official stance (to my kids, the only people who really care about my official stances...and I'm not even sure they care all that much). I believe that telling those who wish to enter a same sex marriage that they can't would be imposing religious beliefs on them, and therefore it would be wrong. I also believe it would be wrong for government to force churches (of religions that hold that marriage is to be only between a man and a woman) to perform same sex marriages as that would destroy freedom of religion. So as long a nobody else's rights are being stepped on in the process, why should government care if two men or two women want to commit to each other?

I like hairy, lumpy men, much better than soft, curvy women. I guess that means I'm straight. Quite frankly, I don't know why gay people would want to get married, anyway. What's the point? (Did I stir the pot up a bit? ;))

People are allowed to love whomever they want, but can you redefine chocolate as vanilla? Sure--call it what you will, but it doesn't change the flavor, or the truth. Marriage has always been an institution between a man and a woman, designed for the promotion of the human race and raising of families. If people want to form domestic partnerships and receive government benefits on taxes, I'm all for that, but you can't redefine an age old truth. No government has the power to change what marriage is, just like they don't have the ability to make chocolate be vanilla.

Once upon a time it was believed that interracial marriage would lead to societal decline.

Wait, there are still bigots who believe that...

Marriage has been defined a lot of different ways over the milleniums and between difference cultures. What makes the definition you prefer right?

Same here. How can there be a link between sexual preference and moral decline....
