Trollywood.

I was at the cinema recently and saw a trailer for Troll Hunter, a Norwegian film about the government employing someone to hunt the above mentioned mythical creatures.

Now this film hasn’t even been released yet and already American studios are negotiating for the rights to remake it.

Why?

If people want to see a film about hunting trolls then this desire has already been catered for by the Norwegians. Hollywood has a habit of buying the rights to perfectly good films made in other countries and turning them into American versions.

Troll Hunter will be interesting BECAUSE it is Norwegian, it won’t look or sound like an American film but that isn’t something to be afraid of.

I watched an English dubbed version of John Woo’s Hard Boiled where the dialogue seemed to be mainly people shouting at each other between gunfights. Then I saw a sub titled version of the same film and it was entirely different. There was good dialogue and character development and the film was greatly improved.

So instead of making a remake of Troll Hunter, probably set in Oregon or some such why not just watch the original?

Watching films from other countries can be an entertaining insight into their cultures. Mind you, those French films where people mope around smoking Gauloises and bursting into tears or laughter for no apparent reason are shit.

And by the way, I am having a problem commenting on some people’s sites, when I click Post Comment my text disappears. Any ideas?

I totally agree about this. the original is still better cause it's an original. Why make it into something else?

and about the comment problem - I've had it too. I have no idea what is up with that...

You make a good point about it being annoying American film companies interfering but I doubt a film about trolls would be that great to begin with, though I'm saying that as a big hater on the concept of trolls. I don't have any ideas for the other thing either buddy, except for to try a different browser or something similar? Unless you've been given some sort of ban thing for commenting too many people or something, I have no idea. Hope you get it sorted out anyway buddy.

Baiba: I tried commenting on yours a couple of hours ago but to no avail.

Yeamie: You hate the concept of trolls?

I enjoy some foreign films, better than the Americanized versions. I've also had trouble with comments disappearing. I had to sign out of google, and sign back in without checking the "keep signed in" box. It's helped me.

Hmm I never had the problem that my text disapears when commenting yet. Government hunting for Trolls, sounds like a B-Movie ;)

Oh my god. The boyfriend and I just watched this last month. He LOVED it. I kept waiting for the punchline but the entire movie was one giant joke. That I didn't think was very funny. I don't know how a remake could make it any worse. Nevermind, hollywood manages to screw up everything.

The text disappearing is happening to me, too!

I agree the US should just show the Norwegian version, but for some reason, it probably wouldn't make as much money as if better know American actors starred in a remake. It's all about the $.

Yeah that problem is going around, blogger seems to be being a pain in the butt.

As far as the films go, if hollywood can make a quick buck they go for it. Plus they can't have a good movie take place in another part of the world, oh nooooo, everything in their magic little land has to happen in America. Yeah those french films with them doing nothing are complete shit.

Agreed. Remakes usually always get watered down. Even American on American.

Padded Cell Princess said...

Probably because most Americans would rather watch the movie than read the book so watching a movie with subtitles would be like doing both at the same time... ;)

I'm with you on the originals, but that's probably because I have a slight hearing problem and watch everything with subtitles or closed captioning on.

The worst I have seen is Quarantine, as a remake of REC. It's not that Quarantine is bad, hell I enjoyed it. But once you see that it is SHOT FOR SHOT exactly the same as it's Spanish language parent, it becomes a lot harder to take it seriously.

Hard Boiled is FANTASTIC, and overdubs suck. I'm all about the subtitles.

Miranda: I had a problem awhile back where I couldn't comment on anyones sites and that solution rectified it. This only stops me from commenting on some sites however.

Mo: Norwegian B movie, doesn't that get you excited?

Vapid: You didn't like it but your boyfriend did, sounds like a blokes movie to me.

Kelly: You've hit the nail on the head.

Pat: Glad it isn't just me, also glad that you agree.

D4: American on American sounds dirty.

Padded: I didn't want to get into the lack of literacy amongst many people in the First World.

Joshua: Sorry about the hearing problem.

KevD: I was going to mention Rec and Let the Right One In being shot for shot remakes but didn't want to belabour the point so I am glad you brought it up. All hail John woo (in his Hong Kong period, anyway).

I LOVE foreign films, and I'll look forward to the original version of this.
Oh and I've been having the same problem with comments too.

P. S. Your comment about cows = ultimate awesomeness. I laughed so hard I almost cried. Great point *giggles*

I hate remakes. >:3

I live in America and I'm ashamed of the drivel that comes out of Hollywood. I think the art of film died along with the 60s.

I want to watch hat movie. :D

I'm having the same issue with my comments. There are a few times I've been tempted to write "testing testing" first before submitting my real comment.

I want to see the Norwegian version of the film.

Major Mack said...

yeah, trolls suck and so does the commenting issue. Never encountered it though. sorry

true, i hate this trend in hollywood

This trend of Hollywood RUINED a loft of Japanese films. The most prominent of which was The Grudge. -.-

I promise you, no matter where it is from, I will never watch a movie called or about Troll Hunters.

Tony Van Helsing said...

Elizabeth: Looking forward to it myself.

Interdasting: Dawn of the Dead was good but it went a bit A Team toward the end.

Adrie: It's not all bad, Blue Valentine was great.

Pesos: Me too.

Stina: Frustrating, isn't it.

Major Mack: 'Trolls suck', I like it.

j littlejohn: Shows a lack of ideas.

Dylan: They fucked up Ring and Dark Water too.

Jason: Thanks, glad you liked it.

my day: Check out The Lives of Others or Downfall, brilliant European films.

Adam: Seems to be ongoing.

Margaret: It might be the best film ever made!

I have this same issue with Hollywood remakes of Japanese horror films (which I love). They seem to take out the atmosphere and replace it with gore.
And crap acting.

re comments, try logging out then in again but uncheck the 'remember me' box, it's a problem with cookies.

The chocolate chips aren't big enough.

Tony Van Helsing said...

Dirty: Y box is already unchecked, I had a problem where I couldn't comment on any posts previously but this is just some.

Al Penwasser said...

Trolls: They look like Kim Jong Il with no penis.
Not that I know for a fact that Dear Leader actually has a penis.
I just assume.
And that's gonna have to be good enough for me.
But, check out the hair.

Hasidic Plumber said...

What about a Tarantino's take on Troll Hunter? You know you are loving the idea. Naah, who am i kidding? it would probably suck, regardless of the director.
Perhaps we could film a movie called raccoon hunter that's vaguely inspired by troll hunter.

Tony Van Helsing said...

Al: You manage to bring Kim Jong Il's penis into this matter, you have a rare skill.

Hasidic: Chris Columbus is to be director. Adequate ut unexciting, I think he did the Fantastic Four films which to be honest were less than fantastic.

Bart said...

i think its already out. i remember watching the trailer for this last year. and they should remake it cause i dont think its in english. that movie looked cool though, i still wanna see it

Dilord said...

You just have to hate Hollywood for making movies out of comic books and you realize that the paper twin of that movie is far better than the film it self.

LOL I usually hate remakes. And as for the blogger issues - I've had that problem recently too, but have no idea why it stopped. Sorry I can't be more help.

Are the trolls in the photo from your personal collection? They're really cute. I keep seeing your comments around so I'm checking you out and liking what I find. I'm your newest follower and I hope you'll follow me too.

Couldn't agree more. It's not just foreign language films either; don't even get me started on Alfie or The Italian Job.
